This pediatric palliative care discussion will explore the intensive care of an infant with a progressive metabolic disease to consider questions such as:
1. How do we balance concerns for the suffering of a child/dependent patient, staff distress and parental/family wishes?
2. How do we hold a family’s care goals when we disagree and/or are experiencing our own distress as palliative care providers? Over months? Over years?
Dr. Bogetz is a pediatric palliative care specialist with the Integrated Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care (IP3) team at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. Dr. Bogetz cares for children with serious illnesses in the hospital and also in the outpatient IP3 Complex Care Clinic, working alongside other medical professionals to provide an added layer of support for families.
